35. ...and rules for them

Now that I have self-sculpted miniatures in acceptable quality, I also want to play with them! In Frostgrave, the golem can be used as a construct, and the treeman as a giant, so I can check off one of my main systems. And in the other one, Oathmark, they certainly can be used as subtitutes for some monsters from the official rulebook, like an Eachy and a Giant for example. But that would bleach out their individual character a bit… So home-brew rules are needed!

Balanced DIY rules are relatively easy to make with small and cheap units. Because there are a lots of similar units to approach the stats and the point values. And even if its calculated wrongly, it wont have that great effect on the overall balance. But monsters are another piece of cake… They greatly differ from each other, and the special abilities are also a bit too few, to characterize them.

I tried to use existing special abilities, and tried to give a balanced point value to them. But as I can’t completely play test them, I can’t guarantee that these descriptions are right. But feel free to try them, and if You have any remark, just let me know!

  • Earth Elemental A5 / M5 / F4 / S0 / D13 / CD3 / H8 / Pts200
    • Special: Monster, Large, Spellcaster control**, Stone skin*, Uncaring
    • Equipment: None
    • Race: Unaligned
    • Terrain: Summoner Academy
    • Replacement for the miniatures: Eachy
    • Justification: If there is a Water Elemental, then all the other elements must be there too
  • Treeman A5 / M5 / F5 / S0 / D13 / CD5 / H12 / Pts400
    • Special: Monster, Shielding (1), Enormous, Nimble, Courage (3), Flammable*, Bark Skin*
    • Equipment: None
    • Race: Elf
    • Terrain: Forests + Dark Forests
    • Replacement for the miniatures: Giant
    • Justification: If you have forest-style elven army, you need a Treeman
*Some new special abilities:

  • Flammable: suffers 1.5x damage (rounded up) from fiery attacks (Fireball, Fire Breath), so if original damage would be 3, it will be 5 (1.5 x 3 = 4.5, rounded up to 5)
  • Stone/Iron/Bark Skin: damage suffered from bows is halved (rounded down), so if original damage would be 3, it will be 1 (0.5 x 3 = 1.5, rounded down to 1), like in the Undead rule in Oathbreakers

**A new spell is also needed for the Earth Elemental:

  • Summon Earth Elemental (CN9): just like the Summon Water Elemental spell in Battlesworn
Some fun pictures at the end!
